Activities
When in town…
The property is at the edge of the town of Coulonges-sur-l’Autize and a five
minute walk away from the centre where you will find the shops including, of
course, a couple of bakeries with their wonderful selection of breads and
pâtisseries. The supermarket is another ten minute walk from the centre and it
stocks everything you could possibly need during your stay including a good
selection of wine......not taxed exorbitantly! There are also a few bars and
simple restaurants to choose from.
On a Tuesday morning, Coulonges hosts a traditional market with stalls selling,
amongst plenty of other things, fresh sea food, local cheeses, fruit and
vegetables, honey, French soaps, clothing, hot food to eat there .....and more
tasty baguettes!
When in the town you could also pay a visit to one or two of the important
monuments and historic places. There is a grand château which is open for the
public to visit from May to November every year. There is the Romanesque Church
of St Etienne and the important Gallo Roman remains just outside the town. There
is an interesting museum too, which shows the history of barrel making and wheel
making, both of which were once of importance to the town.
Non musical activities
There are a number of interesting possibilities open to sports enthusiasts in
the area, and also plenty of less strenuous options for those who take their
leisure time more gently! The town offers tennis, cycling, horse-riding and
swimming, and you don’t have to travel too far to find a golf course or a
fishing lake either.
A trip to the Atlantic coast takes about an hour and La Rochelle and the Ile de
Ré are a similar distance away. Other activities, if time allows, might include
shopping and sightseeing sprees to the nearby larger towns of Poitiers or Niort;
and, of course, a leisurely boat trip down the peaceful waterways of the Marais
Poitevin.
